- MECHANISM OF ACTION OF AMOXICILLIN & CLAVULANIC ACID:
- • Penicillin kills bacteria through the binding of the beta-lactam ring to DD-transpeptidase, inhibiting its cross-linking activity and preventing new cell wall formation. Without a cell wall, a bacterial cell is vulnerable to outside water and molecular pressures, which causes the cell to quickly die.
- • Amoxicillin is similar to penicillin in its bactericidal action
- • Clavulanic acid is in a class of medications called beta-lactamase inhibitors. It works by preventing bacteria from destroying amoxicillin.

- • Amoxicillin/Clavulanic acid is used in adults and children to treat the following infections: • middle ear and sinus infections • Respiratory tract infections • Urinary tract infections • Skin and soft tissue infections including dental infections • Bone and joint infections
- • Follow all directions given to you by your doctor or pharmacist
- • You may give/take amoxicillin before, with, or after food. Space the doses as evenly as possible throughout the day
- • Your doctor will advise you on how much medicine you should give to your baby or child. The usual dose is 40mg to 90mg of amoxicillin for each kilogram of body weight a day, given in two or three divided doses.
- • Doses may be different between patients depending on the severity and type of infection.
- • Doses may be changed in special conditions so always follow your doctor's or pharmacist's instructions.
- • If you take more than you should, talk to a doctor or go to the hospital straight away.
- • If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember it unless it is nearly time for your next dose.

- • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant, or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine. • Your doctor will discuss the possible risks and benefits of using this medicine during pregnancy and breast-feeding • Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Amoxicillin/Clavulanic acid if you: • have glandular fever • are being treated for liver or kidney problems • Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken, or might take any other medications including over-the-counter non-prescription medicines, prescription medicines, herbal supplements, vitamins, and supplements.
- Although the following side effects are not common in everyone, some patients may complains from:
- Allergic reactions, the signs may include: skin itching or rash, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, body, or breathing difficulties
- Nausea
- Diarrhea
- Other severe skin reactions can include: changes in skin color, bumps under the skin, blistering, pustules, peeling, redness, pain, itching, and scaling.
- Flu-like symptoms with a rash, fever, swollen glands, and abnormal blood test results.
